Weaned Babies

Our babies are weaned using the Abundance Weaning Method, please read below.  Because we use this method we cannot guarentee a "weaned by date".  Every baby is different and on their own schedual with weaning, we will offer you the best guess possible.   The foods that the babies are weaned to are varied throughout the year with the seasonal veggies and fruits. Also birdie bread, pastas, rice, other grains, and sprouts are given. In addition pellets and some seeds are given.  Please see Diet for full list and recipes.

In addition to being fully weaned each and every baby has their own flying leasons or fledging when he/she feels the time is right, taking off for the very first flight.  Usually this does not end well but they have to start somewhere.  After the baby is fully flighted and confident we clip the wing feathers to reduce flight.  Every baby has to be clipped different or ensure safe gliding capabilities. Please let us know if you would prefer your baby fully flighted and unclipped.

Abundance Weaning or Bountiful Weaning

I believe that the best way to wean a baby parrot is to use the abundance method or bountiful method.  It is essential to produce well adjusted, confident, independent, curious, and just all around wonderful companions.  The way a bird is weaned can affect his personality and behavior for the rest of its life.  For this reason, it is very important to ensure that only the most effective weaning method is used for your new addition.

When a baby is weaning it relies on the handfeeder for not only food but security.  They are building their trust relationships with humans and other birds or clutch mates.  Improperly weaned babies have problems trusting humans and are often finicky eaters and may even become feather pluckers.

Forced weaning is devastating to the babies and unacceptable they are very much individuals and have their own schedules. Unlike forced weaning, with abundance weaning babies are not allowed to go hungry.  If they are only eating a small amount of formula from the handfeeder they must be offered soft foods often.  They are continuously surrounded by food.

It is very important to offer a large variety of foods everyday from a very young age .  I would recommend that pellets should be introduced sooner since they are easy to handle by clumsy babies. This way they are accustomed to variety and to not be afraid of different foods.  Even if they are too young to eat on their own early exploration of food will begin with a baby who is not hungry.  A baby who is full and satisfied is one that is willing to investigate with weaning foods. A hungry baby will think of only one thing: hunger and the handfeeder who is depriving him of food.

Babies that are abundanced weaned are all around healthier babies not only physically but also emotionally.  They have the trust and ability to bond with humans and keep the bonds growing.
